"The Bat" (in German, "Die Fledermaus") is an operetta in three acts by Johann Strauss – the son (October 25, 1825 – June 3, 1899), with a libretto by Karl Haffner and Richard Genée after the vaudeville "Le Réveillon" written by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy. The premiere took place in Vienna, at the "Theater an der Wien", on April 5, 1874.

Doctor Falke, Mr. Eisenstein's friend, plots a prank to get revenge on him for an old story: after a masked ball, Eisenstein left Falke drunk in a public garden, dressed in a bat costume, to the mockery of the crowd, which is why Falke was nicknamed "The Bat".

About the "Ion Dacian" National Operetta and Musical Theatre

The "Ion Dacian" National Operetta and Musical Theatre was founded in 1950 under the name of the State Operetta Theatre. The theatre bears the name of the famous tenor Ion Dacian, whose long career is associated with the Golden Age of Romanian Operetta.

From its beginnings, the Operetta enjoyed a favorable reception from the Romanian public, the genre knowing a special popularity especially in the period of the '70s - '80s.

In the new millennium, the Theatre has experienced a period of renewal and modernization. The changes mainly concerned the increase of the quality of productions from an artistic and technical point of view, the attraction of new categories of audience (especially the young audience) and the outlining of a new image of the Operetta, which would illustrate both its rich tradition and the new future projects, designed to transform the Theatre into an important cultural center of the Capital.

In the current repertoire of the "Ion Dacian" National Operetta and Musical Theatre are included musicals, operettas, concerts, gala events, as well as seasonal performances.
