This year there are presidential elections in Romania, but in the new play the elections have already taken place. The freshly elected president of the country (Lucian Iftime) is set to deliver the inaugural speech in front of the citizens in a few hours.
However, Mr. President has a delicate problem. His nose is itching. And not just a little, but strongly. The strange thing is that this inconvenience only happens when he rehearses the speech. Naturally, the idea that this could happen during the official speech, especially when the whole country, millions of people, will be watching him live on television, would mean a political catastrophe. Desperate, the president agrees to be consulted by a great psychiatrist (Răzvan Vasilescu) to get rid of this embarrassing issue.
What follows is a memorable therapy session in which the psychiatrist meticulously dissects the personality and character of the new president down to the smallest detail, to identify the cause of the problem and cure him of this terrible symptom that would make him a laughingstock in front of the citizens right from the first minutes of his term. The psychiatrist proves to be, in reality, the best political consultant that the newly elected president needs.
“The President” is a delightful comedy that explores the political backstage, an amusing yet serious x-ray of the ambitions, sacrifices, and compromises involved in gaining power and the highest position in the state. The moral of the play is that even the most sincere candidate, the most promising and honest leader inevitably ends up deceiving his voters and selling them illusions once seated in the presidential chair.
