The National Operetta Theater and Musical "Ion Dacian" brings back on stage the beloved pop-rock musical "Romeo and Juliet", after more than 15 years
The National Operetta and Musical "Ion Dacian" is enthusiastically announcing the revival of one of the most beloved pop-rock musicals that was part of its repertoire: Romeo and Juliet, the creation of composer Gérard Presgurvic, inspired by William Shakespeare's masterpiece. After more than 15 years since its premiere on the Bucharest operetta stage, the show returns in the same spectacular staging, which combines the emotion of a classic story with the energy and modernity of pop-rock music.
The musical Romeo and Juliet premiered worldwide on January 19, 2001 in Paris, enjoying resounding success: over 2 million spectators in a single year, gold, platinum and diamond records, record sales of albums and DVDs (over 6 million copies), hits that occupied the 1st place in the charts for 32 weeks and the award for the best-selling album of the year. Subsequently, the show was staged with the same success in numerous cities around the world, including London, Budapest, Vienna, Moscow, Seoul, Taipei and Montreal.
In Romania, the musical premiered in 2009 on the stage of the National Theater of Operetta and Musical “Ion Dacian”, being among the most beloved productions in the history of the institution. At that time, the direction and adaptation after the original version were signed by KERO, who returns in 2025 to give a new life to this reference production. The revival this year marks not only the return of an iconic title, but also a staging in which the past and present intertwine harmoniously. Some of the artists from the original cast are also returning in this production, however, in some cases, in roles different from those that consecrated them 15 years ago, these changes reflect both their artistic evolution, and a natural distribution, appropriate to their age and experience they have at present.
The staging remains faithful to the vision that transformed this musical into an international phenomenon, preserving the ingenuity and emotional force that have conquered the audience since its first performance in Romania. At the same time, the passage of time brings an added artistic maturity, and the experience gained in the 15 years is reflected in refined directorial details and in the fresh energy of the show. Although the original structure and spirit remain unchanged, the new directorial nuances will enrich this production, offering both loyal spectators and the new generation an intense, vibrant and deeply emotional experience.
