THE "ION DACIAN" NATIONAL OPERETTA AND MUSICAL THEATRE
THE GYPSY BARON
October 26, 2025, 6:00 PM
"The Gypsy Baron" is an operetta in three acts by Johann Strauss II, after a libretto by Ignaz Schnitzer. The premiere took place at the Theater an der Wien, in Vienna, on October 24, 1885. In Romania, the operetta was first performed at the National Theatre in Bucharest, on January 9, 1890.
The action takes place in the first half of the 18th century, on the once flourishing estates of the exiled Barinkay. The castle is now a ruin; the neighbor Zsupan, a former pig farmer, prospers from exploiting Barinkay's properties. The imperial amnesty brings young Sandor Barinkay (the son of the exiled one) to the forefront, who returns home to be reinstated in possession. Aware that he must account for the robbery, Zsupan proposes to Barinkay to marry his daughter. The young man, however, is fascinated by the beauty of the gypsy Saffi whom he meets at night in the abandoned castle. Returning from the fair, the gypsies acclaim the master's son as their voivode... The action continues and becomes complicated with intrigues, love, war and a victorious return. The happy ending finds Sandor next to Saffi and next to his "subjects" who have chosen him as voivode.
About the "Ion Dacian" National Operetta and Musical Theatre
The "Ion Dacian" National Operetta and Musical Theatre was founded in 1950 under the name of the State Operetta Theatre. The theatre bears the name of the famous tenor Ion Dacian, whose long career is associated with the Golden Age of Romanian Operetta.
From its beginnings, Operetta has enjoyed a favorable reception from the Romanian public, the genre experiencing particular popularity especially in the period of the '70s - '80s.
In the new millennium, the Theater has experienced a period of renewal and modernization. The changes mainly aimed at increasing the quality of productions from an artistic and technical point of view, attracting new categories of audience (especially the young audience) and outlining a new image of the Operetta, which would illustrate both its rich tradition and new future projects, designed to transform the Theater into an important cultural center of the Capital.
The current repertoire of the "Ion Dacian" National Operetta and Musical Theater includes musicals, operettas, concerts, gala events, as well as seasonal performances.
